At Concession Medical Pharmacy we specialize in compounding, which is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are “made from scratch” – individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows our compounding pharmacists to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.
At one time, nearly all prescriptions were compounded. With the advent of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and ‘60s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms, and most pharmacists no longer were trained to compound medications. However, the “one-size-fits-all” nature of many mass-produced medications meant that many patients’ needs were not being met.
Compounding is ideal for patients who are in need of an alternate form of medication which is not provided by traditional manufactured pharmaceutical companies. Our formulations can be created without dyes, gluten, preservatives or lactose to make them allergen free. Our products are great for children who want agreeable flavouring’s added to make them easier to take or can be made into rectal suppositories to avoid vomiting.
Compounding is advantageous for those who need a non-existing dosage of a drug. This is ideal for infants, the elderly and those wanting to wean off a drug. We can also create compounds for those whose medication has been discontinued by pharmaceutical companies (eg. Phenazo) or change the form of a medication from solid to liquid for patients who are unable to swallow their medicine or use a GI tube.
Topical or transdermal medications minimize side effects and target specific issues on the body. We also create formulations that that may be taken through nasal, rectum, intraurethral and intra vaginal passages and in injectable form.
In our state-of-the-art facilities, including a sterile lab, our specially trained compounding pharmacists and technicians area able to deliver personalized, effective products to our patients.
